Councillor Helen Abrahams, The Gabba Ward, has welcomed further measures by Council to identify street trees as part of the development application process.

I have lobbied for development applications to show existing street trees so that the species, size and location of trees are considered as part of Council’s assessment.

I am advised that in the future development applications lodged electronically must identify and provide information on street trees for a ‘well made’ development application.

I know of incidences where street trees have been removed so the new approved building can be constructed. Another problem has been siting a swimming pool immediately below a street tree that constantly sheds small leaves. This lack of foresight has left a major and ongoing problem for the property owner.

If more attention had been given to the street trees in the first place, the need for removal or pruning may be avoided. It is simply too late once a plan has been approved.

“I am delighted by have played a role in this outcome” said Cr Abrahams.
